Please find outlined below information which we hope will ensure you assist in the planning of a visit to the Painswick.
The Painswick is an 18 century merchant’s house built on a steep stoned terrace running down into the Stroud Valley. The nature and topography of the site has made it difficult to adapt the layout of the house to enable good access for our less-able guests. Furthermore, doors and corridors in the old house are generally narrow, and there has proved insufficient space to make the necessary alterations. Sadly, there are steps and staircases throughout the building. We are, however, committed to welcoming all people regardless of disabilities, and will do everything we can to assist and advise anyone with mobility issues. A phone call with our General Manager is essential before planning a visit to the hotel or restaurant so that we can give advice tailored to your needs and make whatever plans we can to overcome the inevitable difficulties caused by the site.
Prior to your arrival
Enquiries and reservations can be made by telephone, email, and fax or via our website.
If you require a taxi to the hotel from Stroud Station (10-minute drive), Bristol Airport (1-hour drive) or Heathrow Airport (2-hour drive), we use a reliable taxi company on a regular basis and we would be delighted to book them for you on your behalf. They do have vehicles suitable for wheelchairs available on request.
On arrival at the hotel
The approach to the hotel is via some rather narrow lanes and we advise all guests to be prepared for this. If your car is particularly wide, or you are uncomfortable driving in narrow lanes there is a good car park in the village, and we can collect you and your bags from there in our car if you call us.
All guests are welcome to come right up to the front of the hotel on arrival where we can unload luggage and assist with parking. We do have a designated area for disabled parking at the hotel, but the car park is fairly tight and It may be a good idea to call us if you need the disabled parking space so that can we be sure it is kept free for you.
The hotel’s main entrance must be accessed via a flight of stairs. The main door leads straight into the lobby of the hotel and there are no stairs or obstructions leading into the Restaurant or Sitting Rooms.
We have staff on duty at all times who can help with your luggage.
The reception area is housed within the lobby. However, all of the bedrooms are located on the floors above, which can only be accessed by using stairs. We do not have a lift and regretfully the building has too many restrictions and listed features to accommodate one.
The floor in the lobby is laid with Stone.
The Restaurant, Hotel Café bar and Garden Sitting room lead off from the Lobby, which are on the same floor and without any steps. The Garden Sitting room floor is laid with Carpet and the Café Bar and the Restaurant floor is laid with wood.
The hotel restaurant
We provide full waiter service from 7.30am until midnight. We provide background music both in the bar and the restaurant, and the lighting is adjustable. Tables are laid without place mats and are candle-lit at dinner.
It has proved impossible to install an accessible WC anywhere on the ground floor where the hotel restaurant is accommodated. Both the male and female toilets have had to be located on the first floor of the hotel which can only be accessed by the main hotel staircase, and there are a further five smaller steps leading up to the toilets.
There is no purpose dedicated accessible toilet. There is, however, a staff WC on the ground floor behind the kitchen area. It is not possible to make general public access through the kitchen area, but we can escort guests to the WC on request. Sadly the access through the kitchen is not suitable for wheelchairs.
All of the bedrooms are located on the floors above the Reception, so need to be accessed via several staircases.
Given the access difficulties, we have not provided fully accessible bathrooms in any of the bedrooms.
The treatment rooms can be found on the first floor and second floor of the Hotel, which are only accessible by stairs.
Our sister Hotel, Calcot Manor, has extensive facilities and better accessibility for disabled guests. We can help arrange transfers to Calcot, to cater for any request which we feel cannot be accommodated here in our treatment rooms.
The meeting room, and private dining room is located on the first floor of the Hotel.
The fire alarm system is bells and does not have flashing lights. Assistance is given if evacuation is necessary. Disabled and elderly guests are highlighted on our daily reports and our Duty Managers are aware of their location in order to prioritise their evacuation if necessary.
Service dogs are welcome, as are pet dogs by arrangement.
We have tried to be as accurate as possible and we have included as much detail as we can in our Access Statement, however we welcome your feedback to continuously improve on the information which we provide.
